What is the standard widescreen monitor size? (in pixels?)?

Thank you! I need it for a comic I'm starting, and with the new development of widescreen monitors and making it in flash, it helps to know how far I can go.

As of a few years ago, it was a good rule of thumb not to make websites or images larger than 1024 wide, since then people would have to scroll left-right, which no one likes to do. Nowadays it's probably pretty safe to make your max width 1280, since
