What were the battle strategies of the Battle of Monitor and Merrimack?

In that battle the CSS. Virgina fought the USS. Monitor and a few other wooden ships. The CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor of course being Iron Clads. These two ships fought for over 3 hours until both presumed they had won. Although there was no winner
