My XP computer cannot open Office documents(.xls or .doc, etc.) directly in File Explorer?

Now i have to first open Word or Excel, then "open existing file" in order to open any Office docs. But this is very inconvenient. i have checked the file property for the sw for opening the file(say Word file) and the connection seems okay(i.e.
